This checks that your Mac has been restarted within the last 14 days.

Kernel and low-level state reset

A reboot clears anything living only in RAM, including unstable drivers, injected processes, and rare memory-resident malware techniques. Persistent malware survives reboots, but ephemeral exploits often do not.

Security updates actually finish applying

macOS increasingly installs parts of updates in the background, but many protections only become active after restart:

kernel patches
firmware updates
browser sandbox changes
system daemons
XProtect and MRT components that sometimes finalize after reboot

A Mac that "has updates installed" but hasn't restarted in 14 days may still be running vulnerable components.

Reduces long-lived attack surface

Uptime matters. The longer a machine runs:

the more processes accumulate
the more memory fragmentation and leaks occur
the higher the chance of stale authenticated sessions, hung agents, or weird privilege states

Restarting periodically resets a lot of that complexity.

FileVault and Secure Enclave hygiene

After reboot, disk encryption keys and authentication chains are re-established cleanly. This matters more for high-security environments than home use, but it is still a legitimate security property.

Kills persistence mistakes

Software sometimes accidentally leaves background services, debug agents, open sockets, or temporary permissions active longer than intended. Reboots clean up a surprising amount of operational sloppiness.

How to fix

Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
Click Restart.
After your Mac starts again, open Pareto Security and run checks again.
