To enable Time Machine, open System Preferences.
Setup and enable automatic backups.
When you click Select Disk, enable Encrypt Backups at the bottom.

Time Machine is the built-in backup feature of your Mac, and it automatically backs up your personal and work data. We verify that Time Machine backups are running regularly (last 7 days) and that the disk is encrypted. Learn more on the Apple Support page.

Why you should enable Time Machine

Time Machine is an amazing feature. You can use it to find deleted files or fully restore your Mac if it got stolen, lost, or destroyed. You should keep it up-to-date so that you're able to restore the disk or find deleted files at any time. And you should have it encrypted so that the external disk is not readable (similar to FileVault).
