Why you should turn off Automatic login

You do not want to allow access to your computer without authentication. This is to prevent anyone with physical access to be able to use your computer.

How to disable Automatic login

  • Open System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
  • Set Automatically log in as to off.

If FileVault is turned on, or the account uses an iCloud password to log in, the dropdown is dimmed and the setting is off.

How to disable on Monterey and older

  • Open System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
  • Click the lock icon in the bottom-left, then enter the account password.
  • Click Login Options in the lower-left corner.
  • Choose an account from the menu, then enter the password of that account.
